Electroclinical aspects of diabetic neuropathy in the city of Ouagadougou
Aims: Diabetic neuropathy (DN) is one of the most common microvascular complications of diabetes mellitus, often leading to severe sensorimotor disability. This study aimed to identify factors associated with the severity of electroneuromyographic (ENMG) involvement among diabetic patients followed in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.
Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional analytical study including 64 patients with clinically diagnosed DN who underwent electrodiagnostic (EDX) evaluation. Sociodemographic, clinical, and biological data were collected. Neuropathy severity was classified as mild/moderate or severe/very severe. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed, with a significance level set at p<0.05.
Results: The mean age was 64.6±8 years, with a slight female predominance (53.1%). In bivariate analysis, severe EDX involvement was significantly associated with a diabetes duration ≥10 years [OR=6.55; 95% CI (1.95-21.9); p=0.002] and age ≥65 years [OR=3.33; 95% CI (1.15-9.61); p=0.024]. In multivariate analysis, only diabetes duration ≥10 years remained an independent predictor of severity [adjusted OR=5.32; 95% CI (1.52-18.5); p=0.009].
Conclusion: The severity of DN was mainly linked to long-standing diabetes, emphasizing the need for early screening and strict glycemic control.
